January 2011

Despite hospital food being better than in all the stories I’ve heard, I really detested my hospital stay.  It was horrible because I was exhausted and my hormones went psycho – all I wanted was to rest and be alone with Devin and Becca, but everyone else had other ideas.  We had visitors almost constantly (it felt like), mostly nurses.  Becca was not interested in eating much, she wanted to sleep (mommy’s girl! J) – and even though her blood sugar levels were fine, the weekend nurses were super worried, and as a new and inexperienced mom, I didn’t know what else to do but obey them.  They got Becca started on a bottle, which I did not want, although they were just trying to bribe her over to breastfeed.  She was a little smarty and figured out it was easier to eat from a bottle…so nursing for the first couple weeks was a frustrating challenge.  Fortunately she soon got over that and quickly developed into the sweet little chunk we know and love.

Yum, yum, eat it up

Notice the fuzzy hair...it soon left entirely

They finally let us go home Sunday evening.  It was so neat, and yet surreal, to put Becca in our car and drive to our home…as parents!  We were greeted by Devin’s mom, dad, and brothers, Ryan and Flynn.  Mom had made a cute “pink dinner” to celebrate.  She was so nice to stay and help us out for a few days too, which was a lifesaver, especially as I had to take Becca to the pediatrician twice in those days on doctor’s orders.

I was so very happy to be leaving with my baby!  They almost didn't let us

We started making a video of Becca every Friday to email out to family and friends and to document her cuteness and general growth.  I hope she likes them and appreciates them when she is older. Here's her "one week old video":

When Becca was a week old she had her first bath, which she didn't really appreciate, but has grown to really enjoy.

"CLOTHES!!! NOOOOOW!!!!"

The Saturday a week after Becca was born Kyle and Vanessa came down from Austin again to visit us.  I wanted to do a “naked baby photo shoot”, which Becca passively resisted by soiling herself, the blanket…basically everything…twice.  #1 and #2.  Did I mention twice? I actually found it hilarious, but we soon gave up and tried other styles of pictures.

Sleeping sweetheart

"You're waking me up for what?"

"Okay, if I have to, I guess..."

"Ah! What's that!?"

"Oh, just some pretty flowers"

Me laughing at Becca's reaction to naked photos...don't look too close

"Feelin' better now, I'll try to go back to sleep again"

"Yuck, flowers again?" She actually tore these up in about 2 seconds

"No more naked pictures!!"

I love her cute big yawns

Trying to smile

"Ooh, I found my yummy hand again"

Scratching her itchy chin...not really

2 week old video:

Devin left us on the 21st for a transportation research conference in DC – he was gone for five days.  It was really good for him professionally (and he got to visit Brett and go to the DC temple), but very bad for me emotionally and mentally.  I may or may not have punched and cracked the wall one morning at 2 am when Becca wouldn’t sleep .

Okay, so I probably did punch the wall...not even that hard really!

When he came back, we went to the Houston temple for a session, while Mom Moore tended Becca.  It was really nice!  Becca enjoyed her first time on temple grounds.

3 week old video:

The first month was a roller coaster ride of emotions…just ask Devin.  I was usually weeping; either from frustration or because my cup of love was overflowing.  One of my favorite first memories in those early days with Becca was as she was (successfully! finally!) nursing and I was singing to her “Tell Me Why” and was struck by the feeling that Heavenly Father had chosen her to be my daughter, and me to be her mother.  I love Becca!  Although it sometimes stretches me very thin, being a mom is a wonderful adventure.

Pinky girl!

  1. I love hearing about other women's hormonal "moments" makes me feel a little better. I may or may not of had similar moments.
